How To

How can you implement a Quality Management Plan?

QMP (Quality Management Plan), introduced in ISO 9001,2008, provides a systematic method for improving processes, products, or services through continuous improvement. It emphasizes on how to continuously measure, analyze, control, and improve processes, product/service, and customer satisfaction.

QMP is a common method to ensure business performance. QMP is a standard method that improves the production process, service delivery, customer relationship, and overall business performance. QMPs should address all three dimensions: Products, Services, and processes. A "Process" QMP is one that only includes one aspect. QMP stands for Product/Service. The QMP that focuses on customer relationships is known as the "Customer" QMP.

There are two key elements to implementing a QMP: Strategy and Scope. They can be described as follows:

Scope: This determines the scope and duration of the QMP. For example, if you want to implement a QMP that lasts six months, then this scope will outline the activities done during the first six.

Strategy: This describes the steps taken to achieve the goals set out in the scope.

A typical QMP has five phases: Planning (Design, Development), Implementation (Implementation), and Maintenance. Here are the details for each phase.

Planning: In this stage the QMP's objectives and priorities are established. Every stakeholder involved in the project is consulted to determine their expectations and needs. After identifying the objectives, priorities and stakeholder involvement, it's time to develop the strategy for achieving the goals.

Design: During this stage, the design team develops the vision, mission, strategies, and tactics required for the successful implementation of the QMP. These strategies are then put into practice by creating detailed plans.

Development: This is where the development team works to build the capabilities and resources necessary for the successful implementation of the QMP.

Implementation: This is the actual implementation and use of the QMP's planned strategies.

Maintenance: Maintaining the QMP over time is an ongoing effort.

Additional items must be included in QMP.

Participation of Stakeholders: The QMP's success depends on the participation of stakeholders. They should be involved in planning, design, development and implementation of the QMP.

Project Initiation - A clear understanding of the problem statement, and the solution is necessary for any project to be initiated. In other words, the initiator needs to know why they want to do something and what they expect from the outcome.

Time Frame: This is a critical aspect of the QMP. A simple version is fine if you only plan to use the QMP for a brief period. If you're looking to implement the QMP over a longer period of time, you may need more detailed versions.

Cost Estimation is another important aspect of the QMP. It is impossible to plan without knowing what you will spend. Cost estimation is crucial before you begin the QMP.

QMPs should not be considered a static document. It changes as the company grows. It is important to review it periodically to ensure it meets all current requirements.
